"When I first came to see Dr. Wetter, I weighed over 400 lbs., I had multiple co-morbidities, and I was probably just weeks from a wheelchair. I'd lost my ability to work, my ability to function, and--worst of all – I was losing my life.

From the first consultation I had with Dr. Wetter, I felt comfortable with him, and I felt totally confident in his ability. I have never met a doctor with such an excellent bedside manner. He's the most respectful, kind, and compassionate physician I've ever had the pleasure of meeting, and my first impressions have only been confirmed the longer I've known Dr. Wetter. I've never felt embarrassed, I've never felt as though I couldn't ask a question, and I've always felt that I would get my answers in an un-rushed manner. Dr. Wetter has always taken the time to make me feel comfortable. When I place my life into Dr. Wetter's hands, I know I've placed myself into the hands of the best.

Dr. Wetter did my open RNY, as well as my panniculectomy/hernia repair, and I could not be happier. I've lost 215 pounds in the past 13 months, and I am healthier and happier than I've been in 20 years--than I've EVER been, actually. I can go dancing, walking, horseback riding, skiing, rollercoaster riding, sailing, rollerblading, jogging, up and down stairs, cross my legs!!...In short, I can lead a NORMAL life again. I have resumed my career, and I have resumed living. I will be here to see my son grow up. How do you thank someone for saving your life...and for giving you your life back?"

"I would LOVE to give a testimonial for Dr. Wetter. I feel like one of his biggest success stories (if you'll pardon the expression). No doubt, ALL of his patients do.

There really isn't anything big enough that I could ever do to thank Dr. Wetter for giving me my life back, so I'll try to begin to thank him in these few paragraphs.

Dr. Wetter is truly one of my favorite people on this planet! He's given me SO much. If it's not exactly what you're looking for, let me know. I'd really like to help here.

Thank you for this opportunity to thank him!"

Patient #3

"Less than a year ago, I weighed 330 pounds. I have lived in Tracy for the past 14 months. In the past year, with the help of gastric bypass surgery and a consistent exercise program at In Shape, I lost 130 pounds. It has not been an easy journey for me to transition into being grounded in my body. I was not overweight until I reached my early twenties. As a teen, surviving in a physically, emotionally and sexually abusive environment, I stabilized a "normal" weight by obsessing over my body image. I fasted three days a week, went on diets, and used laxatives. In my early twenties, I met Jose, my husband, whose love and support gave me the courage to confront and discover myself through therapy. Because I suffered from post-traumatic stress, it was very difficult for me to deal with the images that came up in therapy, and I turned to my drug of choice: food. It was very difficult to maintain balance with this "drug" because I still had to eat to survive. Some of the side effects I experienced by being obese are: shin splints, leg cramps, backache, not much flexibility, difficulty in taking care of everyday needs, and sleep apnea (I needed a machine to keep breathing while I slept)."

"During the years of intensive therapy, I created a barrier so I could feel safe in the world, literally layers and layers of skin to protect me as abuse issues surfaced and my healing journey began. It has almost been 15 years since the beginning of my metamorphosis. For a long time I was very much in a cocoon-like state. Two years ago a dear friend said to me, "Monika, you have healed emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. So why do you still carry this shell?" Wow! What a question I thought. He said, "You know what I think? I think you may be holding some of your abuse in muscle memory. There is this place called Bay Area Model Mugging; why don't you try it?" So for three days at the BAMM training, I was attacked and had to defend myself. I relived my earlier molests and rape and through doing this and defeating the monsters in my closet, I regained my lost inner power while healing and bringing fresh energy into my muscle memories.

On March 1, 2001, I decided that I was ready to break out of my shell and fly like the butterfly I knew I was. I underwent a surgical procedure called gastric bypass performed by Dr. Wetter at Mills-Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame. Dr. Wetter created a new stomach pouch while bypassing some of my intestines. This resulted in smaller food consumption, which passes rapidly through my body. This is a drastic operation (it is not meant for
everyone) which has many risk factors. Although, after many years of yo-yo diets, my body literally was not cooperating with me without tremendous efforts, leaving me feeling like a failure. This surgery is a tool and there is a very slight chance that I can gain the weight back if I do not observe specific guidelines. The main difference is I now feel normal and can eat in moderation and feel satisfied. I did experience some complications during surgery, but the surgery was well worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I am on a high protein food plan and take many vitamins and supplements. I have learned that regular exercise not only creates lean muscle mass and tightens loose skin, but also balances the stress in my life. This is important to prevent my using old patterns of food as a coping mechanism. I exercise at In Shape five days a week doing three days of water aerobics and two days of weight training.

It is now almost one year since my journey began and I am 130 pounds lighter. I am living an exuberant life, no longer trudging against the flow of the river with rocks and boulders on my back. I now flow with the river filled with enthusiasm for the future, living in harmony with my body.

Someone once told me that angels fly because they take themselves lightly. I feel like an angel who flies like a butterfly!

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to share my story."
